The Purpose of Coach’s Corner is to minister to the “Total Person.”
The four areas that make up a person’s character:
Mental, Physical, Spiritual and Team.
Mental
Our minds consist of two parts: concious and subconcious. The subconcious will accept anything the conscious mind allows into it.
Our ability to use our conscious mind to choose the things we allow to come into our subconcious mind creates habits that will dominate our decisions and behavior.
“You sow a thought and you reap an action.”
“You sow an action and you reap a habit.”
“You sow a habit and you reap a character.”
“You sow a character and reap a destiny.”
It all started with a thought!
Therefore “taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” (is the most critical action we can take. (II Corinthians 10:5) The mental picture we should have for the words “take captive” is that of a policeman taking a fugitive captive from a car. The officer first has him get out of the car and put his hands on the roof and then the officer ‘frisks’ him. We should ‘frisk’ every thought that enters our head to make sure it is the truth and consistent with God’s word.
Physical
Our physical bodies are given to us to provide a headquarters for our God-given spirit. We should work to keep our bodies in top condition so that we will always be ready to minister to others and help them become the total person they were created to be.
A workout and nutrition program with enough calories burned and enough cardiovascular involvement to increase the body’s metabolism to increase muscle and shrink fat cell is essential. Muscle burns fat and has 10 times the capillary network as fat. Life is adequate oxygen throughout the body and the extra oxygen in a muscular capillary network will produce total fitness.
Fitness and faith go hand in hand. It takes faith to exercise when there was no evidence of being in condition. However, enough exercise and wise eating will produce a body that is a fat burning machine and will maximize the opportunity to be fit.
Spiritual
The spiritual part of a human being is the most important part because it will last forever. Each person’s goal should be to become alive spiritually and then work to become mighty in spirit.
As spiritual growth occurs we should all look to transfer our knowledge to others who have been influenced by our service to them.
To grow mighty spiritually we must invest ourselves into prayer, reading and memorizing the Scriptures and then handing off the baton to someone that God brings into our lives.
“I don’t care where you boys go to worship but I want you in church every Sunday.”
Bobby Dodd
Georgia Tech Football Coach
Becoming mighty in spirit is best achieved by joining a local church that teaches and obeys the Word of God. By far the most powerful thing you can do to transform your present mental state into one that is God-conscience is to memorize scripture and find someone to disciple.
Team
It takes teamwork to make the dream work. Teamwork is the ultimate working out of what God works into your body, soul and spirit.
The word for love used there is the Greek word ‘agape’ which means ‘charity’. Charity is simply giving something to someone when they don’t deserve it.
“What is the greatest commandment of the law, Jesus said to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all of your soul and all of your might. And the second is like unto it, love your neighbor as you love yourself.”
Matthew 22:36
When each teammate is being charitable to the other, each will experience the ultimate teamwork experience. I Corinthians 13 gives the best description of what this kind of love looks like. Of course our ultimate example was Jesus himself, who willing died for our sins without having done anything wrong.
He led a perfect life and therefore became the perfect sacrifice for us. We become perfect by believing in Him and accepting His perfection as a gift.
“The greatest gift you can give your team is to truly love your teammates.”
